This is my first post! I don't know how it will look or how it'll be received.
I’m sorry if it upsets, but sometimes I get philosophical...hence the reason for this!
The title of the Poem by Wilfred Owen 'Anthem for Doomed Youth,' is as poignant as it was then as it is today. Yes the circumstances are vastly different but the connotations of the message still ring true. But can the views expressed by all the Poets of the First World War be compared to the events of today?
He often spoke of war and the horrors of it, both private and public. The effect a war has on a generation and the people who are close to them. The constant worry parents must have felt for their children, heading off to the battle grounds. The battles of other people and the lack of understanding; why them? They say a whole generation of people were affected by its violence, misery and struggles.
Lives were lost, people maimed for life, just trying to do what is right for themselves and their loved ones. The doomed youth Owen spoke of were a generation of fighters and good grief, did they fight.
Torn or separated, however you see it, into battalions, groups of fodder for weapons aimed at them and the distinct sense camaraderie…mostly.
On returning from their battles, both public and private, there was nothing to reward them for their toils and suffering. All they had trained for, all they had fought for…gone in the blink of an eye.
So as you can see, much has changed in society…hasn’t it?
